Quite often I hear the same two reasons for people not opting for shelters when looking for a pet. While some reasons may be legitimate most are just not based on fact. I’m going to go over some of the most common “myths” about pet adoption and hopefully shed some light on the facts.
The first myth I hear for why people don’t adopt from a animal shelter is that they believe the pets in shelters have behavioral problems and can’t be retrained. While it is true there are a number of animals in shelters because of abuse or neglect this doesn’t mean they can’t become an outstanding and loving pet. Also, not every pet in the shelter is abused. They are usually a number of pets in shelters because their owners could not longer afford to take care of them or have to move to a location where pets are not allowed. This has been a big reason for a lot of animals to come into the shelters as the economy has been terrible for the past few years.
I’ve adopted many “neglected and abused” animals and sometimes I had to put forth extra work to acclimate the animal to its new home and reassure them that they were safe and in a loving environment. But once the animal becomes settled they usually display more loyalty and devotion than the ones I’ve gotten from breeders. I’ve met many people who have experienced the same thing as me so I know my experiences are not isolated cases.
Just FYI some shelters offer the opportunity to participate in obedience training and pet parenting classes. These sessions serve as a transition period for the pet and owner to bond together and are a great way to establish your new relationship.
The second myth I hear is that animal shelters don’t have purebred animals. I’m not an expert here, but according to the Humane Society there is an approximately 25% to 30% purebreds in animal shelters. So for those of you set on getting a purebred animal a shelter can be a great place to start your search and could even save you a ton of cash.
Well, I hope I’ve shed some light on the two most common “myths” I hear about pet adoption. Please remember that adopting an animal from a shelter is a great way for you to find the pet you’re looking for and also saving an animal’s life.
